Hello and welcome to This Week in Ladies!
Here's what we've got on tap for you this week:
- This Week in Comics
Eisner Awards, Hawkeye Annual #1, Young Avengers #8 and Batgirl Beyond (Batman Beyond Unlimited #18) | Congratulations to the 2013 Eisner Award Winners! Kate's great in Hawkeye, Prodigy's got Becca taking her earrings out in YA, and we make our first foray into the DC universe. And we like it. A lot. Check out these great interviews with artist Annie Wu of Batgirl Beyond and occasionally of Hawkeye at DC Women Kicking Ass and Project: Rooftop (a great blog for those of us with superhero costume feels). MTV's got an interesting piece on Miss America's costume, too. Please believe that if we could dress like Miss America Chavez in our day-to-day lives, we would. Finally, book rec: Super Graphic by Tim Leong.
- This Week in Teen Wolf
"Currents" and "Visionary" | You guys. "Visionary" was good TV. Not just Teen Wolf-good, but actual good! We talk about unreliable narrators and complex villains and the death count gets another category. Life is hard in Beacon Hills, y'all, and death's not cut-and-dry either.
Current Death Tally:
Undead Men: 2
Undead Women: 1
Flashback Deaths: 7 (one woman and six men)
- Personal Lady Heroes
If this video from PBS doesn't convince you of Julia Child's greatness, then there's probably nothing we can say to change your mind. Also check out Julia Child's Kitchen at the Smithsonian (warning: major time-suck!), the NYT obit, and this 1989 interview. Finally, if you really want to become a Julia Child expert, we highly recommend the following books: My Life in France by Julia Child, Dearie by Bob Spitz, and Minette's Feast by Susanna Reich and Amy Bates, a lovely picture book about Julia's cat.
Allison really enjoyed Dolly Parton's book Dream More . She did some dramatic readings from the book and Becca agrees: A++. To learn more about Dolly's philanthropic efforts, visit The Imagination Library Web site. A woman dedicated to putting books in the hands of children is really a woman after our own hearts here at TWiL. Need more evidence of Dolly's greatness? Well, check out "Shit You Should Be Listening To" and marathon Nine to Five, Steel Magnolias , and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
- This Week in Shit You Should Be Listening To
"Potential New Boyfriend" by Dolly Parton
With a special mention to Alison Krauss' cover of "9 to 5"
